In the 1980s, Bob York set the standard for entertainer bus washing. Drivers would travel for

miles just to have their buses washed by him at United Coach in Nashville, TN. “You got a nice

wash, but it’s not a Bob York wash.” was often heard.

Bobby Carl “Bob” York was born in 1937 and raised in Brownsville, KY and Louisville, KY.

After high school he was employed at the Philip Morris tobacco company, and later as a music

promoter. Bob started the Blue Lick Opry in Louisville and got sued by the Grand Ole Opry - so

the name had to be changed to Blue Lick Jamboree. In the 1970’s he moved to Nashville and

started a truck wash business at the Keystop Truck Stop on Trinity Lane (now known as the

Love’s Travel Stop). The entertainer community quickly discovered Bob’s business and started

getting bus washes there. But in the Summer of 1979, there was a nationwide trucker’s strike due

to high fuel costs. A trucker parked his rig across the entrance of Bob's wash bay and even the

buses couldn't use it - so this put Bob out of business. Thinking fast, Bob went to Al Maynard,

owner of United Coach, a bus mechanic shop. Bob asked Al if he could start washing buses

there. Al agreed and soon had a wash garage built just for Bob. The buses would line up for

washes, which also brought in business for mechanical work. His customers included the drivers

for Conway Twitty (Bruce Crawford / Billy Parks), Loretta Lynn (Jim Webb), Faron Young, Oak

Ridge Boys (Harley Pinkerman), Donna Fargo (Chip Huffman), Mel Tillis (Radio Red), and

many others. Bob would often tell people how many buses he had washed that day, and

according to Allan Maynard (Al’s son), Bob’s personal record was 14 buses in one day.

When Bob was ill with cancer, Faron Young gave Bob a Peace Lilly and told Bob that he hopes

he (Bob) lives as long as the plant lives. Very shortly after Bob passed away with cancer, even

though Dorothy had a green thumb, she could not keep the plant alive.

Bob passed away on Sep 12, 1988 while residing in Orlinda, TN.
